Sir William Thomson, 1st Baronet, FRSE FRS (1824–1907) was a Scottish physicist who is often considered the father of thermodynamics. He was known as Lord Kelvin when he held the position of President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He is best known for his work on thermodynamics, especially that on energy transfer and calorific combustion. His name is one of the 72 names inscribed on the Eiffel Tower.
